I have been unable to start this blog for want of a title. Silly huh? I named it a few times and messed around with the formatting and then ... nothing. Everything I needed to puke out onto the internet would flee from my brain.
Today I came up with a title.
What's it mean?
Well, if you've ever had me as your childcare provider, or even just around your kids; you should know my philosophy about balloons. Before you are able to get a balloon near, from, or around me you have to know the mantra. Repeat after me kids:
Me: "What is the nature of balloons?"
You all: "transitory"
Me: "What does that mean?"
You: "that it WILL pop"
So...we don't always know when, or how it's gonna pop. We can try and be careful and hey, maybe our balloons will last quite a while, or maybe they will burst from a change in the temperature, or an unseen hazard. They might just slowly deflate over time. Hell, we might even need to pop them on purpose if we just can't have them around anymore. And yes, we can be sad when they pop if we need to be.
Some balloons are very special, even if we got them at Trader Joes and they lived in the car for 3 weeks before we happened upon their withered orbs under the seat one day, but they all go someday. (Well, except maybe the Mylar ones on a stick we've had a couple of those kicking around for 4-5 years) BUT ... just because your balloon popped doesn't mean it has to ruin your whole day.
There will be other balloons. They may not be THAT balloon, which you will remember for as long as you need to. They may be balloon animals, or hot air balloons, or floating metallic hearts from the supermarket. They may be someone else's balloon that they share with you, or just let you hold for a little while. But all balloons pop. It's their nature.
But do have fun with your balloon while you can. Even if it pops while you're walking through the parking lot.
P.S. if you have a filled-up water balloon and you try to bite a hole in it, chances are good it will explode in your face. This is not a metaphor, Nigel did this today and scared the crap out of himself and cried and cried.

You're right, they do all pop. I"m glad you're writing.
Sometimes the balloon breaks and part of it goes down your throat and into your windpipe and you choke on it and end up in the hospital in a coma for 2 weeks, but you come out of it eventually and have to learn to walk again. But later on, maybe a year (or more), even though you have a little brain damage, you start to feel better and life becomes pretty OK again. I'm scared of balloons now.
I like your writing.
Perfect. Thanks for putting it on the Internet.
Yes dad, and sometimes they get away from you and get stuck in a tree right out of reach. There are many inherent casualties associated with balloon ownership. Try to stay focused here ;-)
I'm glad you started. We don't know when, or how, but yes. They will pop, sooner or later.
